Supervisor: Dr. Duncan McIlroy

Robyn completed her BSc (Hons) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She completed her undergraduate thesis in marine organic geochemistry under the supervision of Dr. Ali E. Aksu. Her research was focused on characterizing the geochemical makeup of a sediment core from the SW Black Sea shelf using detailed analyses of TOC, TS, δ13C and δ34S, and using various multi-proxy core and seismic data to investigate the latest Pleistocene to Holocene evolution of the paleoceanographic communication between the Black Sea and the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Robyn’s MSc research is focused on the characterization of the ichnology of the Winterhouse Formation in Western Newfoundland. She will also assess the impact of bioturbation on reservoir quality, with a specific focus on the effect of bioturbation on the natural fracture propagation patterns in mudstones and tight sandstones. Virtually no systematic ichnological research has been undertaken in the Winterhouse Formation to date. Her project involves the collection and taxonomic assessment of the trace fossils in the area, to provide a catalogue of the ichnology of the formation. Additionally, specific samples will be selected for serial grinding to produce high resolution three dimensional morphological reconstructions of the burrows and natural micro-fractures within the calcareous silty mudstones of the Winterhouse Fm. These models will illustrate the effect that the burrows have on the localized natural micro-fracture propagation patterns within the samples.

Robyn worked as a geology intern with Shell Canada Ltd. during the summers of 2012 and 2013. She has subsequently accepted a full-time offer from Shell to begin working in their Calgary office in early 2015, once she completes her graduate degree.
